- For Jacob Rantzau, the familiar often becomes a point of departure for larger questions about how we live our lives and what we leave behind for those who come after us. In Inheritance, we encounter people across generations in scenes where memory, trust and inheritance are set in motion. The past is ever-present, but never fixed. It can be preserved, transformed, forgotten or passed on – and it is within this tension that Rantzau explores how our experiences continue beyond ourselves.

What we collect, what we carry and what we let go.
The exhibition Inheritance revolves around memory and inheritance through the figure of an elderly man archiving his life. Papers overflow; blood runs from the sheets and onto the floor, leaving traces of a life that has come at a cost – vitality, pain, labour, history. Children play carefree in the water, seemingly indifferent to the weighty narratives of the past. In two other works, fire, light and clouds appear as open-ended symbols of thought, danger, warmth and change. A child lying in the grass holding a burning piece of paper becomes an image of trust: fragile, yet still held onto. Inheritance invites reflection on our relationship with the past – what we choose to carry forward and what we allow to be consumed by the passage of time.
