Christian Lemmerz - NACHT
The exhibition presents monochrome paintings, bronze sculptures, drawings, and drypoint etchings rooted in the cultural wasteland of our time—an uncompromising universe where beauty and discomfort converge.
The works convey a dark, underlying tone - a despair lifted from the personal to the universal. Symbols such as the cross and the Madonna point to a long European art tradition, while the monochrome expression creates an intense, almost sacral space.
“I see the exhibition as a dark chord, an enclosed gaze, or an imperceptible tremor. Except for a single work, all the pieces are monochrome. Survival lies in the art itself, not in its content.”
– Christian Lemmerz

Gravity as the underlying tone
As art critic Torben Weirup describes, Lemmerz’s practice over nearly five decades has been marked by seriousness, reflection, and pain.
From iconic works such as the rotting pig carcasses in glass vitrines at Esbjerg Art Museum in 1994 to monumental marble sculptures that reveal human cruelty beneath classical beauty, Lemmerz confronts the viewer with existential questions.
His artistic practice ranges from performances and installations that transform both space and audience to sculptures in marble and bronze that challenge the historical significance of the material.
