Background
Henrik Godsk was born in Hjørring in 1975 and lives and works in Northern Jutland. He is a seventh-generation member of the travelling Hertzberg family and grew up around the family’s travelling fairground in Denmark and Norway. From the age of seven, he began working with paint alongside his father and grandfather, helping to maintain and repaint the fairground facades. These early experiences gave him a practical understanding of large surfaces, precise lines, geometric patterns and clearly defined colour schemes.
As a teenager, Godsk began painting on canvas after encountering the work of artists including Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani. His transition from fairground facades to fine art did not mean leaving those early visual influences behind. The decorative forms and colours of the fairground remain a visible part of his paintings today.
Godsk left life around the fairground at the age of 23 to pursue an artistic path. Since then, his background has become a recurring point of departure in his work: a personal and cultural history that he continues to explore through portraits, interiors and larger-scale installations.
