Jacob Rantzau
b. 1973 - Aalborg
Visual artist Jacob Rantzau (b. 1973) engages in his practice with themes of both universal human and societal significance. His point of departure lies in the individual’s capacity to act within the realities and structures they encounter—while simultaneously helping to shape them.
His work reflects on the choices and omissions that define human behavior, whether we are present and attentive or absent and detached—conditions we continuously navigate as individuals.

Background
Modern Realism with Depth
Jacob Rantzau (b. 1973) is a Danish visual artist whose work is rooted in a figurative and technically virtuous tradition, drawing clear lines back to masters such as Rembrandt and Caravaggio. Combining classical painterly skill with a visual language defined by intensity and symbolism, Rantzau has carved out a unique position in contemporary art, with the human figure as his central focus. His works explore existential themes such as solitude, responsibility, and vulnerability in an age characterized by abundance, social expectations, and climate consciousness. Working at the intersection of the individual and society, past and present, Rantzau examines the fundamental choices we make as human beings in the world.
Reflecting the Contemporary Moment
With a keen eye for the contemporary psyche and its place within societal structures, Rantzau addresses issues such as digital information consumption, FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), the climate crisis, and mental fatigue. This is particularly evident in the series So Far Away, where the modern search for meaning, doubt, and occasional paralysis are visualized through both figure and landscape. An undercurrent of reflection and critique runs through his work as a quiet reminder: that doubt and contemplation are necessary steps toward understanding. Notably, the artist’s gaze often turns inward, drawing on his own experiences as a father, a citizen, and a human being. His motifs unfold in a pictorial space where the private, the collective, and the symbolic are intricately interwoven.
Humanity and Nature – A New Landscape
In recent years, nature has taken on a more prominent role in Rantzau's imagery. While the human figure previously stood alone in an existential void, it now interacts with the landscape—acting as a dreamscape or a nightmare where the surroundings mirror the inner life. This evolution creates new layers in the tension between humanity, nature, and civilization, enriching his oeuvre with both poetic and political resonance.
A Rigorous and Investigative Approach
Jacob Rantzau’s works are the result of an extensive process involving hundreds of sketches, reflections, and technical experiments. Studies of the Old Masters are often an active part of his methodology. During residencies at institutions such as Skagens Kunstmuseer, Brandts, and Vendsyssel Kunstmuseum, he has conducted in situ studies of artists like P.S. Krøyer, H.A. Brendekilde, and Poul Anker Bech. His goal is not to copy, but to investigate how history and craftsmanship can enrich contemporary painting. This reflective practice lends Rantzau’s work a physical presence and weight that supports its psychological and symbolic depth. Every brushstroke feels deliberate and charged with meaning.

Dive deeper
In the exhibition So Far Away, Jacob Rantzau unfolds his uncompromising visual universe on a monumental scale. Through realistic and at times ominous paintings, he addresses the human condition in an era shaped by digitalization and climate crisis.
The viewer encounters both smiling portraits and scenes of displacement that reflect our contemporary reality—and ourselves. A central theme is FOMO—the fear of missing out—which here takes visual form in both portraits and landscapes that appear at once intimate and unsettlingly distant.
“I believe we long for something we can no longer define—and perhaps never truly possessed.”
