Christian Lemmerz2024
VII
Sold
Acrylic on paper
94 x 186 cm.
VII is a powerful acrylic work on Japanese paper in which Lemmerz reduces the human figure to a raw, gestural anatomy of black strokes against a deep, blood-toned ground. The body appears simultaneously present and dissolving -a turbulent structure of aggression, vulnerability, and instinct.
The coarse brushwork carves through the red surface like wounds or pathways, giving the piece an almost ritualistic, primal intensity. In VII, the human form is not depicted but excavated: exposed as a tangle of impulses, mortality, and physical memory. The fragility of the Japanese paper contrasts with the brutal force of the mark-making, amplifying the work’s existential urgency.
