GUDALO – SIEGE 1995 takes its point of departure in the Siege of Sarajevo and a 1995 video in which a soldier sings to his fellow soldiers accompanied by violin music – surrounded by the hopelessness of war, yet still making room for hope and humour. The title GUDALO, Bosnian for violin strings, connects this story to Dino Cama’s own grandfather, who played the violin and had hoped to pass the instrument and its language on to his grandson. The monumental figure stands firm and confrontational, surrounded by rhythmic bands of colour that evoke the movement of music. Bringing historical and personal memory together, the work reflects on human endurance, courage, the passing of time, and the significance of the present moment.
