Michael Kvium2025
A Darker Side (a + b)
Sold
Oil on Canvas
76 x 38 cm.
A Darker Side (a + b) (2025) is a two-part painting in which Michael Kvium explores the tension between sensory presence and visual absence. The left panel depicts slender, leafless branches set against a pale, hazy sky, with a solitary bird perched at the top, introducing a fragile sense of stillness.
The right panel forms a dense black field devoid of figure or horizon, acting as a visual pause that closes the pictorial space and intensifies the experience of interruption and darkness.
Together, the two surfaces establish a dialogue between nature and negation, visibility and withdrawal. The work can be read as a reflection on the limits of perception and what exists beyond the illuminated field of consciousness.
